Spring and Fall are the best times to aerate your lawn. But, Aeration can be done anytime the conditions are right. As long as the grass is actively growing, with enough time to recover before winter dormancy sets in. The soil can be moist, but it should not be wet.
In Wisconsin, if your lawn is already thick, healthy and vigorous, once per year is often enough.
Twice per year, for lawns that are thin or struggling.
Up to 4 times per year, for poor soil conditions, or when faster results are desired.
After you receive your quote, just tell us you'd like to proceed. We'll place you on the schedule, usually within a given week. When the conditions are optimal for aeration we'll call or email a day or two in advance of arrival. If there's a conflict, we'll do our best to accommodate your schedule.
You do NOT need to be home during our service, but it's helpful to have any obstacles marked for us, so they can be avoided. Such as sprinkler systems, invisible dog fencing, or underground wiring. We will always email or call a day or two in advance.
The holes are always about 3 inches deep. The plugs that remain on top of the lawn may appear smaller because they break apart as the machine ejects the cores. This action helps the plugs decompose faster.
The soil "plugs" will quickly decompose and usually disappear completely in 1-4 weeks, depending mostly on weather conditions. This returns fresh, oxygenated soil back into the lawn, and also helps to smooth out the lawns surface.
To be honest, every yard in Wisconsin can benefit from at least one annual aeration.
Especially if the lawn takes longer to green-up in the spring, has brown patches, poor drainage, clay type soils, or grass that browns easily during the summer heat.
For newly laid sod you should NOT aerate for at least 4 months. For a seeded lawn, aeration should not be done until a full growing season has passed. However, aerating BEFORE seeding or over-seeding is always helpful, as it improves seed to soil contact for proper germination.
Yes you can. Most rental stores charge between $60 -$90 dollars to rent a machine for 4 hours. You will also have to pick up, and trailer the machine back to the store on time, not to mention the labor involved. The other option would be to call us! For about the same price we do it all for you.
